"I graduated from college with a degree in Early Childhood Education . . . and taught in first a public and then a Christian school for a total of four years before I was married. When I first saw the title of your [Doreen Claggett] book, Never Too Early, I refused to read it. All I had learned at college was opposed to the title alone. When it was time for me to start school with my now 9-y...

About Our Christ-Centered . . .

Advanced Phonics Program

How does your Advanced Phonics Program differ than others?

Our full program is so saturated with Scripture and its principles that it clearly stands out among others! All Christ-Centered Curriculum materials diligently follow "add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge" (2 Peter 1:5). We teach to children's spirits first (Proverbs 1:7), and then rejoice to see God enlighten each student's academic knowledge as rapidly as individual God-given capabilities allow (Psalm 94:10). His Word is so "living and powerful" (Hebrews 4:12; Isaiah 55:11) that numerous times parents have called us to say that repeatedly the Scriptures in the lessons have addressed something that just happened in their family. And it is an extra blessing to hear moms report just how much they've been learning about the Lord---and phonics---as they teach!

Who should use the Advanced Phonics Program"?

Typically, the Advanced Phonics Program was prepared for the Advanced 1st or 2nd grader---one who has already completed Christ-Centered Phonics Levels B:1--B:3 and is an independent reader. However, this program is also highly recommended for an older student who lacks a strong phonics foundation. The Advanced Phonics Program is specifically designed for children who need to learn:

  • How to identify the different types of syllables.

  • How to divide a word into syllables, and where an accent (the stress) is generally placed.

  • How to develop good reading comprehension through: (1) Clear pronunciation of words, (2) Grouping words together to sound like talking, (3) Using proper voice inflection [the rise and fall of the voice when speaking], and (4) Observance of punctuation marks.

  • How to read paragraphs smoothly, with expression, from one line to the next.

  • How to read and understand frequently used prefixes and suffixes---especially pronunciation of prefixes in accented and unaccented syllables.

How would you describe your program?

Our Advanced Phonics Program uses a multi-sensory teaching methodology to ensure that all types of learners---auditory, visual, and "hands on"---achieve success. This program incorporates some elements of our Beginning-to-Read Program plus the advanced Phonics Lessons for Flashcards 94-118. The ultimate goal is to well-equip each student to read, comprehend, and obey the Word of God. This level is comprised of Christ-Centered Phonics materials plus some advanced readers:

CHRIST-CENTERED PHONICS:

The Advanced Phonics Program incorporates these items:

  • Phonics Visual Aids
    Phonics Flashcards Set (118 cards)

  • Phonics Lessons
The Advanced Phonics Program represents the culmination of the Christ-Centered Phonics system. Students will cover the entire spectrum of phonics instruction through Phonics Lessons for Flashcards 32-66, Phonics Lessons for Flashcards 67-93, and Phonics Lessons for Flashcards 94-118. To see a sample, click here.

Note: Students who have completed Level B phonics should repeat Phonics Lessons 32-66 and 67-93 before going on to Phonics Lessons for Flashcards 94-118. We must never assume that because a child has completed a lesson plan book that he or she has mastered it. However, it is also true that you as a teacher have discretion in choosing which exercises are needed to strengthen any remaining weaknesses and which content requires only occasional review. At the Advanced Phonics level, the main challenge (except for Phonics Lessons 94-118) will be through Phonics Workbooks: C:1, C:2, and C:3. A student will now be held far more accountable in writing for what has been previously taught in phonics.

  • Phonics Workbook Instructions & Answer Keys
After completing the daily instruction in the Phonics Lessons manual, the next step is to use the appropriate level Phonics Workbook Instructions & Answer Key to help your child complete assigned workbook pages. To see a sample, click here.

  • Phonics Workbooks
Students on the Advanced Phonics track should complete Phonics Workbooks: Level C:1, C:2, and C:3 during the school year. Workbook assignments continue to be one of the best times to develop godly character in your students! The goal is not to just complete a certain number of pages per day, but to also encourage quality work---with a proper attitude. (For more information, click on Building Godly Character Through Seatwork Activities under "Seminars.")

ADVANCED READERS:

During the school year, your student(s) should move on from the mechanics of "learning to read" to experience the joy of "reading to learn." This is an exciting time as students begin to enjoy greater flexibility in the types of books they can read. The readers below represent some good choices for your child's adventure of exploring God's wonderful world of books.

  • Phonics Drill Reader
This book (recommended for 1st graders and above) should be practiced daily---in addition to supplemental readers. Its word lists (100 per page), phrases, sentences, and paragraphs cover these skills: initial consonant blends, short/long vowel words, consonant digraphs, consonant blends, suffixes (-es, -ed, -ing), vowel digraphs, modified vowels, diphthongs, consonant and vowel variants, silent letters, and words with prefixes/suffixes. It includes 1,000 words used in 90% of all reading materials. Students will learn the scriptural account (KJV) of Creation, the Fall, the Flood, the Law, and Grace. Faithful practice will help increase reading speed dramatically.

  • God is Good" Series
If your child has not completed this series of 9 readers, we recommend doing so before going on to the Bible-Wise readers. These books will help a student transition from beginning readers, which contain one- and two-syllable words, to a more diverse vocabulary. A child should proceed through these readers at a comfortable pacing---according to his or her own God-given capabilities.

  • Bible-Wise Readers
These readers are colorfully and realistically illustrated. Stories are well-written, interesting, and biblically accurate. Each reader contains a different story. Check out these wonderful titles:

    • MIRIAM: The Big Sister's Secret
    • SAMUEL: The Boy Who Listened
    • DAVID: The Fearless Fighter
    • JOSEPH: God's Dreamer
    • ELIJAH: God's Miracle Man
    • JESUS IS ALIVE: The Amazing Story
    • SAUL: The Miracle on the Road
    • DANIEL: The Praying Prince
    • JESUS: The Promised Child
