Teaching K3 Students (3-year-olds)

When parents have already invested time talking to and reading with their children, we've found that such little ones were given a great "head start" toward being ready for learning. In general, learning the letter names/sounds of the alphabet by age four is within reason. Many are able to read short-vowel words; some "eager beavers" can read both one- and two-vowel words. A few, however, may not grasp reading until age four. If the latter happens, it's perfectly alright. If your focus is on character training (especially how to follow instructions well) plus passing on the joy of learning, instruction at age four will be quite rewarding for both you and your child.

In math, threes enjoy counting to 100 by 1s, 5s, and 10s. They can recognize 0-100, and achieve a good grasp of concepts ("how many") through 10 or 20. In addition, they can comprehend the "how many" concept of addition through the five family. For example, it is easy for them to concretely figure that "3 apples + 2 apples = 5 apples." This type instruction can easily be taught informally during playtimes with counting objects (blocks, Legos, little cars/trucks, Snap Cubes, etc.).

How much time should be spent teaching a 3-year-old? Normally, 15 minutes on phonics and 15 minutes on math is sufficient. This may be spread throughout the day. Ask the Lord to also help you be alert for special teaching opportunities. And, above all, ENJOY those precious times with your child.

If you are a first-time buyer of Christ-Centered Curriculum, the following elements are recommended for teaching 3-year-olds. All of the items below are available individually, or with a 15% discount in the "Teaching K3s Package" (001) at Discounted Teaching Packages.
